中国で大流行した「北国の春」をはじめ日本の歌も歌詞は中国語です。他の国で沢山の人に
親しまれＣＤが買われる歌は、その国の言葉で歌われたものが多いのです。なぜか日本でだ
けは日本人が外国語で歌っています。
外国の民謡に日本語訳を付けた小学校の唱歌が沢山つくられました。卒業式での「螢の光」
はその代表曲でしょう。日本人の誰もが歌う歌が、実は外国の曲であることを知らない人も
大勢います。
メロディーの美しさや心地よいリズムなど、音楽は言葉を超えて愛好されることは、良く
知られています。楽器の演奏では言葉の問題はありません。しかし、人の声で音楽を表現す
るときの言葉は、聞く人に言葉の意味を通じて、さらに強いメッセージを送ります。外国で
作られた曲の歌詞を、自国語の歌詞に翻訳して歌われていることの意味は大きいのだと思い
ます。
か。宝塚歌劇の貢献が一番大きいと思いますが、訳詞に多くの才能が注入された環境により、
多くの人に愛唱されています。越路吹雪さんのような大エンターティナーの出現も訳詞の力
が大きかったのでしょう。劇団「四季」のミュージカルの興行的な成功も訳詞なしには考え
られません。
ど総ての曲が日本語訳で歌われています。その頃はハワイアンもラテンも外国曲はすべてジ
ャズと呼んでいたとのことです。
戦争に負けて占領されてからは、英語を覚えようという人が多かったりして、英語のまま
で歌うことが続きました。歌手の芸名にもカタカナの名前が大変多かったのです。ジャズ音
楽の需要が占領軍へのエンターテイメント提供から始まったという事情も大きく影響したで
しょう。
講和条約締結の後は、経済事情も好転して江利チエミ、雪村いずみに代表される子供のと
きから占領軍キャンプで歌ってきたミュージシャン二世が、アメリカの曲を英語と日本語を
混ぜて歌い大流行しました。おりから普及の始まったテレビの力も大きく影響したとも考え
られます。少し遅れて菅原洋一の「知りたく無いの」の大ヒットもありました。ご承知の通
り翻訳語曲です。
「マイウエイ」やハワイアンの「ウエディングソング」のように、時折に散発的に流行の
記録は例外で、影をひそめてしまいました。ポップスの世界ではたった一人「Vacation」
など沢山の訳詞をした訳詞家の活躍があったとのことです。この人の歌詞は翻訳ではなく、
歌い手の個性を生かすために原詩の意味からは大きく離れたものでした。
英語で歌うことに永年親しんで来ました。日本語で聞いたり、ましてや歌うことなどには見
下げた姿勢でいたと思います。言葉は夫々の国の歴史と文化を背景として、ほんの短い言葉
に深い意味が含まれていることがあります。原語が理解出来ればそれに勝ることはありませ
ん。
しかし、現在の日本のジャズ歌手の置かれている状況は、聴衆の絶対的な不足です。一人
の歌手で大きな小屋に２〜３千人の聴衆を集める人は日本人歌手ではほとんどありません。
ＣＤの売上げ枚数も限られたものでしかありません。レコード・ショップの棚を見ればジャ
ズはほんの一部であり、ヴォーカルはまたその極く一部に過ぎません。一番広いスペースを
占めているのはJ-POPという日本人歌手の新譜です。
またこれからも長く愛好される曲が沢山あると考えられます。誕生してから１００年ほどの
歴史しかないジャズの中で、生き残っているスタンダード曲は、これから先はクラシックと
呼ばれるようになり、長く歌われることでしょう。
判らないという人は大勢います。やはり日本語でなければ耳に入りにくく覚えることも難し
いのです。
より多くの人にジャズソングを楽しんで貰うためには、日本語への訳詞を行う事が必要だ
と考えました。その分野で専門の人が誰もやらないのであれば、商業的採算を考えずに労力
を投入することは、趣味の世界でのみ可能です。そこで、あえて日本語への訳詞に取り組み
ました。この訳詞は自分で歌うためではなく、プロ歌手の人に歌って頂くために作ったもの
です。
ご自分の感性で私ならこう歌いたいと、掲載の曲と同じ曲の違う歌詞でも、掲載以外の曲で
